Great news from the Hispanic world, where Honduras just became the fourth Latin American nation, and the 34th nation in the world, to formally ban all corporal punishment of children. Que viva Honduras!
Meanwhile, a further 45 nations have indicated a commitment to full prohibition, and they have embarked on the necessary legal and political processes, as urged by the UN, and as mandated by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
At this rate of progress, this Global Initiative – which now has the support of key international human rights organizations – will reach a tipping point in the next few years, where at least half the world’s nations will have ended the old practice of hitting children. We will look back upon this in the same way we now look back upon the age-old acceptance of husbands hitting their wives.
